Confounding Cupid by Susan Mac Nicol

Confounding Cupid
Book Blurb:
Coworkers Leigh and Ryan are perfect for each other, but why should that make things any easier for Gerald, a hapless Cupid-in-training eager to earn his wings?
Angie J's Review:
I was given a copy of this short story for an honest review.

I have to say Susan is the queen of the quick and amazing short story.  This is an adorable Valentine's Day story of a "Cupid in Training" trying to please his family by receiving all the feathers to be a top Cupid like his father and grandfather.  Gerald is confused because the couple he chose to be the final couple was working out wonderfully and then BOOM not so much.
The story begins with Leigh and Ryan brooding over the fact they liked each other but Leigh called it off...spoiler and wont tell why because it is actually pretty funny in an "Oh crap seriously" kind of way.  If you wanna know you gotta read.  Well, Gerald is going out of him mind to figure out a way to make them reconnect.  What he does is probably a little unorthodox but it gets them to talk and realize they have some sparks left after all.

Blog Tour for Heart's Storm by Julia Sherman

Book Blurb:

Elizabeth Shulman, a twenty-seven-year-old Russian Jewish immigrant, would like nothing better than not to die a corporate accountant working at a Fortune 100 company. She wants to walk away from the corporate rat-race, but...she’s still holding onto the painful memories from her poor past—from the days her family came to America with nothing so that their children could have a free life.

But soon one day’s event turns Elizabeth’s world upside down and inside out. With her bubble burst, Elizabeth decides to take the first step, quit her job. However, her bullying boss from HELL offers her a promotion and a big raise. But there’s a hitch. She must also agree to do pro bono work to bolster the company’s image. Her pro bono assignment: tutor unprivileged kids in a Southwest Chicago elementary school. And there, in school, her life begins to change when she gets a peek at a different type of world from her own.

Heart’s Storm is a bitter-sweet romantic comedy about love and career, family and friends, immigration and hardships, betrayal and forgiveness, and the promise of the American dream.

Jo-Anna's Review:

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the interaction between characters and that it had some funny moments but still had some deep moments as well. I also loved that it has to do with friendship, old and new love, and family. Coming from Russia to America would be a hard and difficult thing to endure and I thought the author did a wonderful job portraying that in the main character. My favorite parts are when Liz is with the children and how they bond. If you enjoy romance novels with some seriousness to them, this is a definite must read for you!

Hyde, an Urban Fantasy (Hyde #1)

Book Blurb:

To survive, they must embrace what they most despise . . . in themselves and each other.

Mitch Turner is everything women want most in a man—charismatic, successful, drop-dead gorgeous. Except he’s not a man—he’s a monster.

The only way Mitch can protect others from his monstrous side is to stop them from getting too close…that and a 7x7 foot cage. Isolated by his genetic curse, he spends his life hurting people emotionally, driving them away before Hyde can harm them physically. But, after a night of the best sex Mitch has ever had, he realizes that might be impossible. Except the woman he was with claims she doesn’t remember any of it.

Eden Colfax is everything men want most, men other than Mitch, that is. She’s kind, honest to a fault and sickeningly sweet. To rid herself of the monsters that haunted her broken childhood, Eden doesn’t lie, doesn’t curse, and definitely never wakes up naked in strangers’ beds…until the day she does.

Then the flashbacks start—places she’s never been, people she’s never met, blood she’s never spilled. She discovers she’s split into two parts—the woman she thought she knew and another who is capable of anything. And the only person with any answers is the one man she never wants to see again.

What neither of them know is that someone is watching them both, manipulating them, determined to see just how evil the two of them really are. And when the truth begins to seep through the cracks, leaving them nowhere to turn but each other, they will be forced into a partnership neither had expected.

Because in life, who you trust is as important as who you are. And when you can’t even trust yourself, sometimes the only person you can rely on is the last person on Earth you should be falling for.

*** An Urban Fantasy novel intended for adults only, as it includes lots of cursing, descriptive sex, biting sarcasm, and themes similar to those in Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, from which this story was inspired.

Angie J's Review:

I received this book from the author for a truthful review.

HOLY HELL PEOPLE!!!  This book is AMAZING!!  Ok so you prolly want more of an explanation right?  You shall get one.  First of all, I approached this author because in college I was loved my British Lit classes....yup I was an English Lit Concentration.  The fact someone wrote a contemporary version of Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde made me want to read.  I saw she wanted reviews and this book SCREAMED to my inner school nerd to read.  I was thrilled she said yes and juggled my reading schedule to devour this book.  You don't have to know or have read the original book at all because you will love this story.

Ok so the story and characters, ready and GO.  Mitch (you better hope he likes you cuz only those he likes can call him that) is the biggest smartass, jackass, POS male around!!!  His secretary Jolie is an total and utter bitch (GROWLING and when you read you will understand).  Eden is a SAINT!!  She wont cuss, swear, or LIE...ever!!!  Carter is Eden's "boyfriend" without the benefits who is sweet and kind but...something ain't right there.  How do you hang around for 6 years without getting SOMETHING from the woman you love.  Hell they sleep in separate rooms!!!

The book begins with Eden waking up buck naked and VERY SORE all over *wink wink* and not with her boyfriend but a complete stranger!!  (Did I mention Eden is a VIRGIN!!!)  Needless to say FREAK OUT!!!  Well things keep happening and she stumbles in to Mitch's office who just happens to be the man who gave her the great "workout".  Well they have a lot of great hateful banter back and forth which I completely enjoyed!!!  Mitch has a big secret.  His "Hyde" is a cold murdering man where Eden's "Hyde" is a total sex crazed woman!! The two begin to work together to help Eden control her "Hyde" and end up falling into bed for like 4 friggin days...uhm yes please can I try that kind of therapy please!!!

Throughout the story there is a mystery of "The Clinic" and you know they are involved with dosing and controlling Eden and Mitch without their knowing.  Throughout the book there is also an investigation about who killed Mitch's sister, a chick at a bar and a drug dealer which allll is very important to the story.

I have to say, when I find a book I enjoy I scream it from the rooftops.  This book is definitely one of those books.  I cannot say enough about the book.  When I am done with this review, I will be opening my nook to read  Jekyll (Book 2) further messing up my book blog reading schedule but IT IS WORTH IT!!!!!!!

Jekyll, an Urban Fantasy (Hyde, #2)

Book Blurb:

“When the devil tells you to stop struggling, do you?”

From the moment Eden wakes up, she knows she’s not in Kansas anymore. She isn’t even on Mitch’s doorstep, her dark-side’s favorite place to dump her. No, she’s somewhere far worse. And far more sterile. Sometimes a girl needs to adapt, be flexible, change. And that’s exactly what Eden will do, all the way back to Mitch. No matter what she has to do to get there. Because his life depends on it.

Mitch has lost something he’d never thought he’d find to begin with. And “It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all” is a lie. A lie people tell themselves to make the pain go away. But the pain doesn’t go away, not in someone like Mitch. It festers. It grows. Until it can’t be held back anymore, even by the bars of a cage.

*** Jekyll is a continuation of Mitch and Eden’s story and may prove confusing to those who haven’t read Book I. So why not go check it out? Heck, the first book is cheaper.
*** This novel is also intended for adults, as it includes lots of cursing, biting sarcasm, and some truly evil people.

Angie J's Review:

I finished Hyde and literally went and downloaded Jekyll because I couldn't WAIT!!!  I HAD TO START THIS BOOK!  I fell in love with the story, the characters and the idea of this series.  Again YES I am a Literature nerd so this book screamed to me, but you don't need to be one to enjoy this series.

Oh so I don't wanna spoil anything but yes a main character does die in Book 1 from Hyde...whose Hyde you ask???  Hahah gotta read it.  We then learn that females have a "Jekyll" where the males have a "Hyde" per the director of The Clinic.  Yes my friends we get a glimpse of The Clinic.  Are they good? Are they bad? HRMMM that is for you to decide.  I have my thoughts but again...don't wanna spoil any.  We also get to know the detective from the first book a lot better this novel.  He is very intriguing to me.  I like that he also has a grudge against The Clinic.....*wiggles eyebrows*...hrmmmmmmmm interesting I know.  Have  I peeked your interest????  I know I have!!!

Ok so Chastity/Eden come to "merge" and can live together.  The Clinic has never seen a person do this so they feel Eden is "special".  They want her to help get Mitch (yeah we are friends so I can call him that) under control and agree on doping.  She is desperate to be with him and so she agrees because she needs to see him.  We also find out about Eden's parents and boy was it a shocker!!!

Mitch is what I like to call "A Hot Ass Mess".  He can't live or function without Eden.  He has never been so out of control and his Hyde is running him.  He is doing all her can to survive while trying to  find her.  Well when they do BOOM go the sparks and *grins* the pants.  Unfortunately Mitch is unaware of Eden/Chastity's merging and so he thinks he was duped by Eden's Jekyll AGAIN!!!  Mitch is an ANGRY boy....I giggle because he reminds me of the Hulk at times and I was yelling 'No Smash Hulk!!" as he trashes his house.

Holy Hell people this book is a slow start but it packs one hell of a finish.  The secrets you learn about in this book make me insane.  I need book 3 like right this second.  The book ends with a major cliffhanger.  All I can say is the tears were freely flowing the last 75 ebook pages.  I kept messaging the author because my stomach was in knots.  I cannot saw enough!  This book is absolutely amazing and 5 stars isn't enough!!!

Authors and Readers: A Mutually Satisfying Relationship

Hey, all! When Angie asked me to write a guest blog, I scoured this site to find something fun to use as my topic. It took about 1.4 seconds to notice that the Twinsies seem to enjoy a little (or a lot of) naughtiness. J And because theme and symbolism are such large components of my work, I decided to use BDSM as a metaphor to talk about writing, reading, and control.

While doing research for my yet-to-be-released erotica novella, I spoke to a number of people involved in the BDSM lifestyle. One thing everyone kept telling me was that, while the Dom controls the situations and sensations of their partner, it’s actually the sub who is in control. The relationship you and I share is the same. The author writes the book the way they want to, but it’s actually the reader who has ultimate control. Let me explain.

Similar to the Dom, as a writer, I can manipulate your body. With a dramatic scene, I can speed up your heart beat. With different sentence length or punctuation, I can change your breathing pattern. I can alter your sleep patterns by writing a book that you can’t put down until the wee hours of the morning. With a great book, an author decides when you get breaks, when you’ve had enough, or when you you’re allowed to…um…when the climax comes (story or otherwise- lol).

But when it comes down to it, the reader controls the kinds of work we put out. If a particular story or character resonates with readers, we pay attention. If you think we don’t listen, if you think we don’t learn, you’re wrong. You teach us what we can and cannot do. As readers, you also determine which books go viral by your purchase habits and Amazon’s ‘also bought’ system, the reviews you leave, and the books you tell all your friends about. You have the power to make our novel a bestseller or to have it be lost at the back of the virtual shelf.

Authors may hold the metaphorical flogger and provide a cuffed-to-your-chair novel for you to read, but you are in control.  So who has the ultimate power—author or reader? Who has more control? Is our relationship equitable? I like to think so. A mutually enjoyable match-up in which we both have our needs met.

In case you’re interested: In life, I think of myself more as a Dom. But in fiction, I guess I swing both ways. ;)
Thanks so much for having me, Twinsies! And for reading Hyde and Jekyll. And, yes, Book III is on its way. Happy reading!

Angie E's  Review :

I read this book over a very SNOWY weekend. In my opinion nothing better than being snowed in ith a good book. It's not very long  160 somthing pages, so it's PERFECT for a weekend read. I was able to read and still accomplish my long MOM TO DO list. I loved the sweetness of a contemporary romance. It's so refreshing and you know that you will ALWAYS find that happy ending. There is always the excitement of the character meeting, the lovers quarrel, then the happily ever after. This was the first book I have read in this series. I really really enjoyed it. I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series. It was a great stand alone book however, I'm kinda anal about not reading a series in order so I MUST read the rest. lol. Actually I retract that.. I WANT to read the rest of the books.  Kate Perry's writing style is unique and enjoyable. She gives the reader such a friendly look into the world of Daniela/Nico and Marley/Brian. I love how she weaved both love stories seamlessly into each other. Neither story distracts from the other and each is given the right amount of storyline to keep the reading interested and not bored. She give such relatable characters. I enjoy a book more when I can relate to that characters feelings, wants, goals , and desires. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a sweet and sassy romance with a smidge of humor. Those are the best kind !

Shadow Through Time Trilogy Book #1-Destiny of Light by Louise Cusack

Destiny of the Light (Shadow through Time, #1)

Book Blurb:

DESTINY OF THE LIGHT is the first novel of my “Shadow Through Time” fantasy trilogy published by Simon & Schuster Australia. It contains elements of romance, magic and horror, taking a woman from our world into the earthworld of Ennae; a sepia world joined to ours by the Sacred Pool. Talis, her appointed Guardian helps her through the dangerous terrain of Ennae, sacrificing everything to love, ensuring her safety in a land where magic prevails and nothing is as it seems. To fulfill her destiny as The Light – the woman whose child will join the four elemental worlds – Khatrene must overcome her amnesia and regain her childhood memories of Ennae while thwarting the plans of an erotic Shadow Woman, a mysterious tattooed man, a warrior Plainswoman, Ennae’s best swordsman and ultimately her own beloved brother.

Her journey takes her to the royal Volcastle atop an active volcano, through the Forest of Desire where every sexual fantasy is fulfilled, the labyrinth of the Altar Caves, soul-destroying Rue Marsh and the haze enshrouded Plains where danger lies in every shadow. Murder and betrayal follows Khatrene, and as the horrifying secrets of the past are revealed, she must struggle to stay alive and protect the powerful child growing within her from its own father, a man who she discovers has systematically destroyed her whole family.

Angie J's Review:

I received this book from the author for a truthful and honest review.

I have to say that in picking this book for review I was really stepping outside of my "box" so to speak.  I am an erotica, BDSM , and paranormal reader so this was alllll new to me.  I had a bit of trouble getting into the book initially because the world building was soooo daunting.  There were so many characters and such unusual names, I even got a bit confused.  BUT don't give up is what I gotta say.  When I finally "relaxed" into the novel I was glad I stuck it out.  Basically Catherine/Princess Khatrene or the White Princess was sent to our world to keep her safe as a child.  Time here and in the world of Ennae is different so when she returns everyone expects a child but is shocked to see a woman.  Khatrene's brother everyone was told committed suicide but actually was teleported back to rule as the King of Ennae.
There are good guys and there are bad guys in the novel and you can kind of tell who is who actually.  I have to say I love me some Tallis.  He is the Guardian of the twins.  He also accidently wiped Khatrene's memories when he sent her to exile as a child.  I love that the two of them fall in love with each other but Khatrene is bound to marry the Dark so she can "heal" the 4 worlds.

This book is amazing with the layers and depth of characters.  If  you wanna try something new...this book is it.  This is a trilogy and I will be sneaking in the other 2 books in my reading schedule because I feel it is a worth while read.

PERSONAL BIOGRAPHY:
One of my earliest memories is of seeing Armstrong and Aldrin walk on the moon on our grainy black and white television in 1969. While my siblings ran around the yard playing, I spent the whole day lying on my lounge room floor watching my wildest dreams come true - humans walking on another world. I was in awe of the event, and I remember it distinctly. It was the first time in my life that I thought I might like to be anything other than a writer. Although in those days there wasn't much question that a 'girl' would get to do anything exciting with her life. Not in Brisbane in the Sixties. So time passed and I went back to telling my class-mates that one day they were going to see a book with my name on the cover.

Another 'peak experience' in my life was when a Russians in Space exhibit visited our town. The show was in a big tent with all the exhibits behind rope cordons, but I begged, and the man running it let me slip past the barrier when no one else was looking so I could touch one of the sputniks that had orbited Earth. I can't begin to describe what it felt like to lay my fingers onto that pockmarked surface and know it had been in the vacuum of space - where I wanted to go. I get goose-bumps still, just thinking about it.

My elder brother's obsession with Science Fiction was another important factor in my development as a writer. Everything he read, I read. Asimov, Heinlein, Herbert, E.E.'Doc' Smith. When I was thirteen, he started sneaking pornography home and I was 'borrowing' that as well, taking it under my mosquito net at night with a torch. Perhaps that's how I developed a fascination for the psychology of sex - why people become obsessed with the object of their desire and how lust twists lives.

My family life was suburban, middle-class. When I go home to Brisbane now, summer still smells the same way as it did when I was a kid. We had a mountain near us that we used to climb - Peg's Mountain - which is still a reserve. I went there a lot with my brothers, we'd disappear for the whole day and come back for dinner. I remember Guy Fawkes night vividly and still find fireworks to be a magical thing. When I was eight I was in love with Prince Planet. When I was thirteen I fell hard for Captain James T. Kirk. He was my first big crush and I've never quite gotten over him.

In my teens I forgot about writing and started 'living' instead. I hung around with my tribe, a group of six girls who still keep in touch. We partied and had opinions - I felt very passionate about politics then. In my twenties I was an activist, first in the peace movement, and then with a big-time commitment to Animal Liberation. I protested outside rodeos with placards like "Real men don't rope baby calves", and did a lot of work towards educating people about animal experimentation. I became a vegetarian then and married.

By thirty I'd had children and I've been passionate about motherhood ever since. However, shortly after the birth of my last child I realised that the odd restlessness which had begun when my father died years earlier, wasn't going away. I went back to working part-time but that wasn't it. The problem was writing. I'd somehow forgotten that I was going to be a writer. I remembered then and I began.

For years I typed every day until I found characters who would tell me their stories, rather than me having to 'make them up'. Finally that happened and I started to get published. I don't pretend to understand the alchemy that occurs when people appear fully-formed in your mind to tell you about their lives, but I'm very grateful that it happens to me and that I'm able to share it with others. I adore the voyage of discovery that drags you along with your characters to see how a story ends. Each new day finds me in front of the computer doing what I love best, drinking heaps of coffee and creating like a mad thing.

Who needs drugs when you can write!

Angie J's Steaming hawt review:

Ok Ok soooo I was given this book from the author and I happily accepted because she is amazing!!  If you don't already know, I love this author.  She is amazingly gifted with the ability to make you, the reader, connect with her heroine Brie.  I FEEL like I am Brie whenever I read these stories.   Now BEFORE you read this book you need to make sure and read Brie at the Training Center first.  This books will take place after she has been collared with her new Master.

Ok so this book is about the first couple days Brie and her new Master have together.  She is still very much in the learning process especially since her Master is a very well known and respected Dom.  I had a big giggle when Brie and Master were *busy* on the sofa and Master had a phone call....very funny scene with Rytsar on the other end.  Man that's a guy I wouldn't getting to know a little bit better *cough cough spin off series cough cough* cuz yeah he is just so damn YUMMY!!!  Also as we Red readers know from the first novel, Brie and cooking= epic fail.  Again poor Brie tries her hand at cooking and it is a riot....omlettes and spaghetti....giggles...Now the part of the book I didn't giggle with was the Wolf!!!  UGH let her go Man!!  I was a little bit disappointed in Brie for not telling Master about what happened between them this book BUT Brie is such a tender hearted girl.  She doesn't want anyone in pain and feel bad for following her heart and breaking Masters rules.

I enjoyed the little bit we learn about Master this book.  He has had a hard life.  I think Brie and her tender heart will help him definitely open up.  How can he not open up to her when she truly only wants his love and to make him happy.

I can't wait for the next installment and yup it will be getting a review here because we LOVE LOVE LOVE Red.  I hope that you enjoy the series as much as I have and continue to.

I am a happily married woman who believes (based on personal experience) that love conquers all. It is a running theme in my writing.

One thing you will notice about my work, I'm all about variety. If a character beseeches me to write his/her story, I willingly give myself over no matter the genre or subject ~ as long as it includes hot, steamy sex. ;)
