Book
Blurb:
Always awkward in her 5’10 frame, Melanie Reeves finds her saving grace
through basketball. Not only is she the varsity team captain, she’s the pride
of Coach Thompson, who holds the keys to a college scholarship. Melanie has
also found 'courtly' love with Will, Coach T's handsome, ball-playing son. When
Melanie is on the court, everything is perfect....until she is forced to face
an opponent who doesn't play by the rules. Jordan Solano's power lies in her
beauty and sex appeal. Never afraid of breaking the rules, she engages in a
scandalous flirtation with the school's married basketball coach. But the
flirtation quickly turns into accusation, and Coach T's job and reputation are
placed in jeopardy after Jordan charges him with rape. Jordan's own reputation
has the school administration unwilling to believe her. That is, until she
makes a startling claim - she's not the only victim. Suddenly, all eyes are on
Melanie, and it isn't for her amazing free-throws. A man's job, a girl's
reputation, and her boyfriend's entire world now rest in Melanie's hands. She
has to decide: keep her secrets and protect her future, or put an end to the
lies...and lose everything.
Melinda's Review:
I want to start off by letting you
know there is rape in this book if that isn’t something you want to read. It was a good book but a tough read for me. I
would give it 3.5 stars
First you have Melanie who was a
senior and the captain of the girl’s varsity basketball team. She was dating her coach’s son, Will, who was
on the boy’s basketball team. Melanie
was saving herself to be with someone she truly loved. Then you have Jordan who
was the student that was having an affair with Melanie’s coach, Coach Thompson
(Coach T).
One night Coach T rapes Melanie
and realizes she was a virgin. This same
night he was suppose to hook up with Jordan. Jordan sees Melanie come out of
the Gym that night. Coach T tells Jordan that he can no longer see her. Jordan
thinks that Melanie and Coach T are having an affair and decides to get even
with Coach T. She reports that she was raped by Coach T and mentions that
Melanie was also.
Melanie has to decide if she is
going to tell the truth or lie about being raped. In the mean time, everyone knows Jordan’s
reputation and no one believes that she was raped. She is made an outcast,
bullied, and has death threats. Melanie
decides to tell everyone that Jordan is lying about Coach T. She does not want to hurt Will, or jeopardize
her or any of her teammate’s possible scholarships or Coach T’s reputation.
I don’t want to say much more
because I don’t want to give away the ending of the book but I was surprised at
what Jordan does and how her story ends.
I was disappointed in the sentencing that Coach T got but unfortunately
that is what happens in the real world also.
